One of the first questions every event host asks is which type of tent they actually need. The answer comes down to four main styles — pole, frame, sailcloth, and structure — and the right one depends on your venue surface, guest count, budget, and the look you want. Here is a clear comparison.

Pole tents

A pole tent uses tall center poles and perimeter stakes to tension a peaked top. The result is a classic, high-peaked silhouette at a budget-friendly price — but it needs to be staked into grass or soft ground, and the center poles sit inside the space. Pole tents are a great choice for open-field weddings and large backyard parties.

Frame tents

A frame tent is built on a freestanding aluminum frame with no center poles, so the interior is completely open. Because it doesn't rely on stakes, it can be installed on grass or hard surfaces like driveways, patios, and parking lots using ballast weights — see our guide on tents on pavement. Frame tents are the most versatile option for corporate events and tight or paved sites.

Sailcloth tents

A sailcloth tent uses wooden poles and a translucent sailcloth top that glows beautifully with light. It carries the same classic peaks as a pole tent but with an elevated, luxury feel — which is why sailcloth is the most requested tent for upscale weddings. Like pole tents, sailcloth tents are staked into grass.

Structure tents

An engineered structure tent uses a rigid clearspan frame for the largest, most open, and most weather-resistant footprint of any tent type. Structure tents can go on nearly any surface and are built for large-scale events, multi-day functions, festivals, and long-term installations. Clear-top frame tents are a popular variation when you want transparent roof panels for a starlit effect.
