Choosing the right tent size comes down to two things: how many guests you are hosting and what they will be doing under the tent. Too small and your event feels cramped; too large and you pay for space you do not need. This guide gives you a simple formula, a guest-count size chart, and the extra space to plan for so you get it right the first time.
The quick formula: square feet per guest
Start with your event style, then multiply by your guest count:
- Seated dinner (round tables): about 12 sq ft per guest
- Seated rows / ceremony: about 8 sq ft per guest
- Standing cocktail reception: about 6–8 sq ft per guest
For example, a seated dinner for 150 guests needs roughly 150 × 12 = 1,800 sq ft before you add a dance floor or bar.

Don't forget the extras
Seating is only part of the footprint. Add space for anything else that lives under the tent:
- Dance floor: 2–3 sq ft per guest (figure ~40% of guests dancing at once)
- Bar: 100–150 sq ft per bar station
- Buffet line: 100 sq ft per serving table
- Stage / band / DJ: 200–400 sq ft depending on the act
- Head / sweetheart table: 100–200 sq ft
Match the size to the right tent style
Once you know the square footage, the tent style matters too.
