It's one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is: it depends on your tent's size, where it's going, and which city or township you're in. The good news is that the rules follow predictable patterns, and most of the time a permit is straightforward — especially with a rental company that provides the documentation for you.
The general rule: size matters most
Many Michigan municipalities follow the International Fire Code and the Michigan Building Code, which commonly require a permit for tents and membrane structures larger than 400 square feet — roughly a 20×20 tent. Below that threshold, a private backyard tent usually doesn't need a permit. Above it, you generally do. Some communities are stricter (certain cities require a permit for tents as small as 200 square feet), so the threshold isn't universal.
When a permit is most likely required
- Tents over your city's size threshold (often 400 sq ft)
- Public, ticketed, or large assembly events
- Tents on public property, in parking lots, or at certain venues
- Enclosed tents with sidewalls, or tents using heating or generators
- Multiple tents grouped together that exceed the combined-area limit
Who issues the permit — and what they ask for
Tent permits are issued by your local fire marshal or building department where the event is held. Beyond the application, offices commonly request a flame-resistance certificate (NFPA 701), a site plan showing placement and exits, and anchoring details. Requirements are rooted in the International Fire Code, the Michigan Building Code, and NFPA standards — but the specifics are set locally, so the surest step is a quick call to your city or township.
